Settings and FAQ
Last updated: 2026-10-08
TabiPencil's settings live in two places: "Account Settings", tied to your account, and the display-related "Settings", saved per browser.
To open account settings
While logged in, open the menu from your avatar in the top right and choose "Settings" to reach the "Account Settings" screen.
- "User Information": change your avatar image ("Change Icon") and display name. "Email" is shown but cannot be changed.
- "Display Language": choose from 日本語 / English / 繁體中文. Saving switches the whole interface language.
- "Notifications": toggle "Push notifications" on or off. On iOS, notifications are available only after adding TabiPencil to your Home Screen. If notifications are blocked, allow them again in your browser or device settings. If the switch fails, the reason is shown (notifications are not available in private browsing).
- "Change Password": shown only if you registered with email and password.
- "Security": lets you sign out of all devices (see below).
Press "Save" after making changes; "Saved" confirms it worked.
To sign out of all devices
Use this if you have lost a device or think someone else has your account. It is in the "Security" section of "Account Settings", and works with Google sign-in too.
- Press "Sign out of all devices".
- Choose "OK" in the confirmation message.
Every device is signed out, including the mobile app and the one you are using, so sign in again to continue.
To change display settings and default currency
The timeline's visible hours and the default currency for splitting are changed on the "Settings" screen.
- "Display Start Time" / "Display End Time": the hours shown on the timeline.
- "Timeline Density": roughly how many hours fit on one screen — "Compact (~9 hours)", "Narrow (~7.5 hours)", "Standard (~6 hours)", or "Spacious (~5 hours)".
- "Default Currency": the currency preselected when entering expenses. Initially, the currency for the country you access from is selected (Japanese yen for unsupported countries).
Press "Save" and "Settings saved" appears. These display settings are stored per browser, so set them again on other devices.
To change the theme color
You can change the accent color of buttons, tabs and other highlights in your travel plans under "Theme color" on the "Settings" screen. No sign-in is needed.
- Tap one of the 12 colors. To use a color that isn't listed, choose it freely with "Pick any color".
- Your choice is saved immediately and "Settings saved" appears. You don't need to press the "Save" button of the display settings.
While a color is selected, the "Preview" in the section shows how it looks. When you open a travel plan, a line in the chosen color also appears along the bottom edge of the header. To go back to the original color, press "Reset to default".
- The theme color is saved per browser and applies to every travel plan you open in that browser. Set it again on other devices.
- Only your own screen changes. Other members' screens, shared pages and shared images keep their usual colors.
- In dark mode, the color is automatically adjusted to stay easy to see on dark backgrounds.
What push notifications cover
Two kinds of notifications are sent.
- Plan changes: when a plan is added, updated, or deleted, members of the same travel plan are notified.
- To-do due dates: a to-do with a due date is notified when it is due (at 0:00 Japan time on the day for "All day"). Checked-off to-dos are not notified. See "Checklists and Packing Templates" for details.
Notifications are not enabled automatically. Turn on "Push notifications" in "Account Settings", or press "Turn on" in the "Get reminders for your to-dos" prompt shown when you create a plan or set a due date on a to-do, then grant notification permission in your browser (or the app). In a browser on iOS, notifications arrive only after adding TabiPencil to your Home Screen.
